Maintaining Indoor Fountain Pumps

A good fountain is built with a quality pump. Indoor water fountains are designed to last many, many years. Yet even the best, most expensive pump on the market will not outlast your indoor fountain. However there are some simple guidelines to follow that will allow you to get the most out of the fountain pump.

To prolong the life of your pump take care to assure it is always submerged in water. Most pumps sold today are designed to be extremely quiet. If you find the pump is making unwanted noise, most of the time there is not enough water in the basin. Continue to add water into the basin until the sound fades. It may initially continue to make some noise until air bubbles are vacated from the inside mechanisms of the pump. Never run the pump dry. Doing so will severely shorten the lifespan of the fountain, cause unpleasant noises and generally ruin the purpose of your fountain.

Sometimes the pump may make noise vibrating against the wall of the basin. If you find this is the case with your fountain, simply position an old sponge behind it or underneath it to absorb and eliminate the vibrations.

Try to avoid frequently turning the fountain power off and on. This will also wear out the pump.

Dust and animal dander accumulation also can contribute to a shorter water pump lifespan. This can easily be prevented by using a section of pantyhose to cover the pump and tie the ends tightly with rubber bands.

If you haven’t been running your indoor wall fountain without water and the pump becomes problematic you may need to disassemble and clean it. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines which should always come included with the wall fountain package.

Pumps are the workhorse of the fountain and will inevitably die out. When considering purchasing a fountain make sure the pumps used in the construction of the piece are made of suitable quality and come with some type of warranty. If you’ve been enjoying your fountain for a few years, or even longer, find your fountain pump has come to the end of its journey and the warranty of the pump has expired, they are found quite inexpensively at most home improvement stores.
